Street Closure: North Cherokee Street Starting August 2nd

Beginning Wednesday, August 2nd, it is expected that a section of N. Cherokee Street at the new Jonesborough K-8 School and the intersection with Skyline Drive will be closed to through traffic. The closure is necessary for the construction of the new traffic circle in association with the school project, and that section of N. Cherokee will remain closed until the traffic circle is operational. Traffic to and from Tavern Hill Rd will be routed onto Skyline Dr which will remain open. Residents along N. Cherokee Street in this area can continue to use N. Cherokee coming from US-11E. The closure is expected to be in effect for 3-4 weeks depending on the weather.

Jonesborough Soccer Signups

Children ages 3 – 15 years are invited to participate in soccer programming for the fall season.  In addition, this year a new adult league is being planned, with players ages 18 years and up invited to play.  You can register online at jonesboroughsoccer.org through July 22nd.  Registration fee is $60 for youth league and $30 for adult league.  Registration ends July 22nd.

You will need to register as a user before you will be able to register for the soccer league.

COMPLETED PACKETS WILL INCLUDE –

  1. A completed registration form
  2. $250.00 Registration Fee
  3. COMPLETED and SIGNED Roster of Players
  4. A copy of EVERYONE’S License &/or Official ID
  5. A release/use of town property waiver signed by each person on your roster.

NO INCOMPLETE PACKETS WILL BE ACCEPTED.  ONCE I HAVE 8 COMPLETED PACKETS, THE LEAGUE IS FULL.  NO ADDITIONAL TEAMS WILL BE ACCEPTED.  NO EXCEPTIONS! 

If you cannot accept this rule, please do not register.

  • Teams must have 9 players to begin a game.  Males and females must be alternated in the batting order. You must have a minimum of 4 female players to play any game.  To help better fill teams, we are allowing teams to play with 6 male and 4 female players.  This means your lead-off batter and your final batter will be male, if you choose to play with 4 females.  This is the only way 2 males can bat back to back.  All 4 female players must play in the field.  There will be no restriction to position but they must be on the defensive field of play.
  • League play will begin Tuesday, June 20, 2023.  Games will be played at 6pm, 7pm and 8pm   The end of season tournament will take place around the 2nd week in August.  Plan on this being held on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday nights.  **If you think you will not be playing in the tournament due to playing in another league, please let me know so we can set the brackets for those that will be here.

The East Main Street Sidewalk Construction Beginning

The East Main Street Sidewalk construction project has begun on the north side of East Main Street. Motorists should expect traffic delays between the Forest Drive to Clay Avenue intersections with E. Main Street.

We project the work to be completed late June-mid July. The work will take place between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Flaggers will be onsite to help accommodate school traffic. Motorists should choose an alternate route if at all possible, during the work hours.

The construction area will be considered a ‘work zone’ so please keep travel speeds as low as possible. Thank you for your cooperation and patience.

Music on the Square Returns May 5th, 2023

Live music in downtown Jonesborough returns Friday, May 5 with Music on the Square in front of the Washington County Courthouse on Main Street in downtown Jonesborough. Music on the Square takes place each Friday evening May 5 through September 29 from 7 to 9 p.m. except Friday, June 30 due to Jonesborough Days.

Music on the Square is a free event open to the public. This season, Music on the Square will feature a diverse range of music including bluegrass, jazz, rock, americano and blues.

MOTS2023The 2023 Music on the Square lineup order is YeeHaw String Band, Aaron Vance, Cruz Contreras, Empty Bottle String Band, Dom Flemons, Johnson City Jazz Collective, Sarah Jean, Into the Fog, Charlie Maples, Ed Snodderly, Sam Collie & the Roustabouts, Gary Brewer and the Kentucky Ramblers, Polyphony Marimba, Bill and the Belles, Dave Eggar, Florencia & the Feeling, Stemwinder, Roxanne McDaniel, Beth Snapp, Sam Lewis and Rob Ickes & Trey Hensley. There will be a rotating food truck every week.

New Music on the Square t-shirts are available for purchase at the merchandise table every Friday night during the event. They are also available at the Jonesborough Visitors Center, located at 117 Boone Street.

Town of Jonesborough Set to Celebrate Arbor Day

The Town of Jonesborough and the Tree and Townscape Board is set to celebrate Arbor Day with a tree planting and distribution event on Friday, April 28th in Jonesborough. The event will take place at 1 pm at the future Jonesborough School site located at 720 North Cherokee Street. An apple tree will be planted in the future orchard area on the school property to commemorate the event. Attendees are asked to park along Thompson Meadow Lane, along the south side of the school site. “Arbor Day gives us a chance to acknowledge the importance of trees and what role they play in enhancing the community,” said Mike Musick, Parks and Recreation Director for the Town of Jonesborough. “The Town is focused on preserving the trees in our community as well as planting new ones to be enjoyed by future generations.” Students who will be attending the new Jonesborough school next school year when it opens will be attending the event, assisting in planting a tree at their new school site. Two hundred tree seedlings will be distributed at the event, free of charge. Seedlings include Red Maple, Pin Oak, River Birch and Dogwood trees. The Town of Jonesborough will also be celebrating 19 years of Tree City USA status. A Tree City USA community achieves Tree City USA designation by meeting four standards sound urban forestry management: maintaining a tree board or department, having a community tree ordinance, spending at least $2 per capita on urban forestry and celebrating Arbor Day.

Arbor Day Foundation Names Town of Jonesborough a 2022 Tree City USA®

The Town of Jonesborough was named a 2022 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation to honor its commitment to effective urban forest management.

The Town of Jonesborough achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program’s four requirements: maintaining a tree board or department, having a tree care ordinance, dedicating an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita and hosting an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation, in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters.

“Tree City USA communities see the positive effects of an urban forest firsthand,” said Dan Lambe, chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. “The trees being planted and cared for by Town of Jonesborough are ensuring that generations to come will enjoy to a better quality of life. Additionally, participation in this program brings residents together and creates a sense of civic pride, whether it’s through volunteer engagement or public education.”

If ever there was a time for trees, now is that time. Communities worldwide are facing issues with air quality, water resources, personal health and well-being, energy use and extreme heat and flooding. Town of Jonesborough is doing its part to address these challenges for residents both now and in the future.

Town of Jonesborough Surplus Meters Bid

The Town of Jonesborough has implemented a major water meter replacement program and is transitioning to AMR. The project is nearly 40% complete with a projected completion date of September 30, 2023. The Town is seeking to sell all surplus meters currently on-hand, and to sell those meters that will become available by the AMR project completion date.

Important Water Quality Report
