2024 Tennessee Songwriters Week

The Tennessee Department of Tourist Development will celebrate Tennessee Songwriters Week in 2024. Jonesborough will host a qualifying round at the International Storytelling Center on Friday, February 2 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Applications are now available for songwriters to sign up to perform and can be found by visiting jonesborough.com/tnsongwriters.

Select songwriters from qualifying rounds will advance to seven pre-determined showcase events February 2024. Finalist from this round will continue to the Bluebird Café Finale in Nashville, Tennessee.

Songwriters will be judged based on song quality, lyrical originality, lack of cliches and clarity of the narrative, performance considering instrumental sound (voice or musical instrument), ability of the audience to audibly understand the lyrics, and the Entrants connection with the audience. A state statute designated the last full week of February each year as Tennessee Songwriters Week, which is traditionally a slow month for travel. The mission of the initiative is to support music venues, generate awareness of songwriters’ contributions to Tennessee, pave the way for future artists, inspire travelers to experience the state’s music stories, history and attractions and venues.

Ribbon Cutting Announced for Jonesborough Elementary School

New School Building

A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at 9 a.m. on Friday, December 15th, to officially unveil the new Jonesborough Elementary School, located at 720 N. Cherokee Street. The new school will serve nearly 1,000 students in the Jonesborough community from pre-K through 8th grades.

Through a unique partnership with Washington County Commission and Washington County School Board, the school was constructed by the Town of Jonesborough who will then lease the building to Washington County for use by the Washington County Department of Education.

The school building boasts state of the art security, classrooms and other educational areas, a large gym with 800+ seating capacity, as well as a landscaped courtyard that doubles as outdoor classroom space, three playground areas for CDC students, pre-K, K – 5th grades as well as passive recreation areas for upper middle grades.

The facility construction was overseen through BurWil Construction which operates out of Bristol, TN. William Burriss, CFO, of BurWil reflected on the project: “BurWil Construction is proud to have served as the general contractor/construction manager for the new Jonesborough School. The project team, comprised of BurWil Construction, Clark Nexsen Architects, owner’s representative Burleson Construction, the Town of Jonesborough and Washington County Schools have worked collaboratively and

tirelessly to deliver a landmark building and facilities that will help foster the education of students and serve the community of Jonesborough for many years into the future.”

Other plans for the 48+ acre site include athletic facilities that are currently underway and will be completed in spring 2024. They include multiple soccer fields, football field, rubberized track, tennis/pickleball courts, baseball field, softball field, large playground, concessions and restroom building, lighting on all fields as well as walking trails throughout the campus. A majority of the athletic facility area as well as all four playgrounds are being funded through a Local Park and Recreation Fund grant provided through the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, Recreation Resources Division. The athletic facilities will be a multi-use area of the campus that will be open to both students of the school and community members after school hours.

N. Cherokee Street Update

Town of Jonesborough Leadership anticipates the reopening of N. Cherokee Street and all associated streets in the area of the new K-8 School, to be mid-December.  Final work is being accomplished to the school and streets leading to the new school, and should be reopened to normal traffic mid-month.  The streets being reopened will include Tavern Hill, Skyline Drive, N. Cherokee Street and Thompson Meadow Lane.  When the streets are reopened for normal traffic, please exercise caution as the existing traffic pattern and signage has been changed from the previous pattern.  Bear in mind, with work on going currently, there will be street closures in effect for a few more weeks, so try and avoid the area if possible.

Nearly all business activities within the city limits require approval to operate, whether the activity is mobile, temporary, or permanent. It is your responsibility to contact the town directly to inquire as to whether your business is permitted or not, and if permitted, what are the next steps to the approval process. Town staff are available to take your inquiries and questions about operating a business in the city. Making those inquiries ahead of time will help you establish the business based on the town codes, thus minimizing potential code violations and fines.
