BMA announces October 22, 2022 as Helen P. Conger Day in the Town of Jonesborough

TOWN OF JONESBOROUGH

A PROCLAMATION HONORING THE

100TH BIRTHDAY OF HELEN P. CONGER

WHEREAS, Helen Conger was born October 9, 1922 in Newborn, Georgia where she grew up, and

WHEREAS, she attended Georgia State College For Women in Milledgeville, Georgia, playing basketball for the college, and after graduation became a Home Economics teacher in Harlem, Georgia, and

WHEREAS, while in the city of Harlem, met her future husband Joe Conger who was working for Pet Milk after graduating from the University of Georgia in Athens, and

WHEREAS, after getting married and Joe getting transferred to Pet Milkfacilities in Abingdon, Virginia then Johnson City, Tennessee, Joe and Helen Conger moved to Jonesborough over 70 years ago, and

WHEREAS, Helen Conger worked as a homemaker raising five children inher home serving as the neighborhood recreation center with all the neighborhood children constantly over at her house, and

WHEREAS, a dedicated member of the Jonesborough United Methodist Church, for decades Helen has served as a “Prayer Warrior”, praying every day for people in need, and

WHEREAS, Jonesborough United Methodist Church is hosting a birthday celebration from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m., on Saturday, October 22nd, open to all friends and family honoring Ms. Conger’s 100 years of life, most of which as a dedicated resident of the Town of Jonesborough, then

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Chuck Vest, as Mayor of the Town of Jonesborough, and in behalf of the Jonesborough Board of Mayor and Aldermen and the citizens of Jonesborough do hereby proclaim Saturday, October 22, 2022 as Helen P. Conger Day in the Town of Jonesborough, with that acknowledgement being displayed on the Visitor Center marquee and on the Town website.

BE IT FURTHER PROCLAIMED, that with her children, eight grandchildren, and sixteen great grandchildren, I encourage all citizens of the Town of Jonesborough to help Helen P. Conger celebrate her 100thbirthday and her life in Tennessee’s oldest town.

In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Official Seal of the Town of Jonesborough, Tennessee, to be affixed this 10th day of October, 2022.
