Alison Brown Brings Her GroundbreakingBanjo Sound to The Jackson Theatre October 16

JONESBOROUGH, TN — GRAMMY Award-winningmusician Alison Brown will perform at The Jackson Theatre on Friday, October16, at 7pm.

Known as one of roots music’s mostinnovative banjo players, Brown has expanded the possibilities of theinstrument by blending bluegrass with jazz, folk, pop, classical and Latininfluences. Billboard praised her playing as having “a unique sonic signatureand an inescapable beauty,” while USA Today called her a “true ground-breaker”who is opening new possibilities for the banjo.

Brown began her musical career as ateenager in Southern California’s bluegrass scene before earning a degree fromHarvard University and an MBA from UCLA. After working as an investment banker,she left the financial world to pursue music full time and has since built acareer as a GRAMMY-winning musician, GRAMMY-nominated producer and co-founderof Compass Records Group.

Her work has received nationalrecognition from NPR, CBS Sunday Morning, The Wall Street Journal, The NewYorker and other major outlets. She has also appeared on programs including TheTonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel Live and The View.

Tales of Our 250^th: A Jonesborough History Variety Show

Pay What you Can

Join the Jackson Theatre and the McKinney Center for a series of programs celebrating local history and America’s 250^th birthday. Tales of Our 250^th includes skits, historians, re-enactors, musicians, and much more in a tapestry of Jonesborough stories and community history. These events will run June-October and start at 7:00 pm. They are Pay What You Can but go ahead and reserve your seats at Jonesborough.com/tickets.

Each evening will include a scene or scenes from the original play The First and Last Town in Tennessee, written by Anne G’Fellers-Mason, which premiered earlier this year at the McKinney Center and was featured in The New York Times. Join Jonesborough historian Paul Fink, portrayed by Tim Herron, as he walks you through the big and small moments that make Jonesborough an important part of the American story.

June 25^th – Embracing the Past: Historic Preservation in Jonesborough with a presentation by Dr. William Kennedy and a performance by local band The Ozone Rangers

September 24^th – The Lost State of Franklin with a presentation by Dr. William Hardy from MTSU and the stories behind the Battle of the State of Franklin with Tipton Haynes State Historic Site

October 22^nd – A House Divided: Civil War History in Jonesborough with a presentation by Dr. Tom Lee form ETSU and a performance by the 52^nd Regimental String Band

An unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker’sDracula, Nosferatu (1922) is the quintessential silent vampire film,crafted by legendary German director F. W. Murnau. Rather than depictingDracula as a shape-shifting monster or debonair gentleman, Murnau’s Graf Orlok(as portrayed by Max Schreck) is a nightmarish, spidery creature of bulboushead and taloned claws — perhaps the most genuinely disturbing incarnation of vampirismyet envisioned.

About the filmmaker:

F. W. Murnau was an influential German expressionistdirector, producer and screenwriter who crafted a total of 21 films, only 12 ofwhich survived in their entirety. A master of light and shadow, Murnauexperimented with new filming techniques, negative exposure, stop-motion, andlow angle camera positions. His adaptation of Bram Stoker’sDracula, Nosferatu (1922), is considered a masterpiece of GermanExpressionist cinema.

John McEuen, as a Southern California Orange County high school student, thought his teenage dream job in Disneyland’s Magic Shop (at 16 years old) was “as good as it gets”. He and lifelong high-school friend both got that 1963 job (magic shop co-worker, Steve Martin) the same day. At 18, music came along. After seeing Missouri bluegrass group The Dillards, John headed towards his new dream: make magic with music, and get on the radio. Leaving Garden Grove for Hollywood, dream became a reality more than he imagined it could be!

Continually performing since 1964, he joined Les Thompson in 1966 as they put together the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, a relationship that would last over 55 years – over 11,000 concerts, 300 television shows, 10,000 interviews. For this ‘family reunion’ show he is also bringing GREAT picker Byron McDowell from North Carolina, with his magical voice and hot instruments – mandolin, guitar, and fiddle.

In 1971, John initiated the landmark Will the Circle be Unbroken* album by asking musical mentors Earl Scruggs and Doc Watson to record with NGDB; then, his brother Bill (manager, record producer) invited Merle Travis. It grew, with Earl’s help, to inviting Mother Maybelle Carter, Jimmy Martin, Roy Acuff, ‘Bashful’ Brother Oswald, Vassar Clements, and Norman Blake to a Nashville studio, hooking them up with Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, for 5 magic hot August days of recording. (John is featured in episode 6 of Ken Burns - Country Music). In 2010, Folk Alliance Organization presented McEuen the Best in the West Award solo performer; his rich history preserving original and traditional folk music earned the 2013 Charlie Poole Lifetime Achievement Award.

NGDB was inducted in to Colorado Music Hall of Fame 2015. In addition to John’s numerous solo accolades, Multi-instrumentalist McEuen (banjo, guitar, mandolin, fiddle, dobro, piano, dulcimer), recognized as a founding member and outstanding performer, departed the end of the 50^th year anniversary tour Oct. 22, 2017. He covers it all in his highly praised book The Life I’ve Picked on Chicago Review Press, published April, 2018.

McEuen has made over 46 albums (7 solo) that have earned CMA and ACM awards, an Emmy film score nomination, IBMA record of the year, five platinum and six gold records, multiple Grammy Awards and nominations, and performed on another 25 albums as guest artist. John’s production of Steve Martin – The Crow for his first all music record won the 2010 Best Bluegrass Album Grammy.

 

The Music of the Wild West CD- produced by McEuen - was honored with the Western Heritage Award.

Other accolades include: Grammy nomination for String Wizards II; the Uncle Dave Macon Award (for excellence in preservation and performance of historic music); 2009 he was inducted in to the Traditional Country Music Hall of Honor. John has produced award-winning projects for several other artists.
