February 2017 Yarn Exchange Celebrates Black History Month

Monday, February 27th at the International Storytelling Center at 7 p.m.

tarter and gaysmIn honor of Black History Month, the Jonesborough Yarn Exchange Radio Show celebrates area African American artists, poets, and leaders. The program themed, “Affrilachia” will be performed on Monday, February 27th at the International Storytelling Center at 7 p.m.

The Southern Appalachian region is home to many artists, poets, and leaders. The Yarn Exchange celebrates those individuals by sharing their stories. A few to look forward to, Steve Tarter and Harry Gay, an African American blues duo included in the famous “Bristol Sessions” of 1927 and 1928. Another spotlighted individual will be Faye Rutledge, a local poet. Many know her work with Bethel Church, where she has performed for many programs and celebrations. And of course, Alfred Greenlee, a true community leader in Jonesborough who doubled as a magnificent singer. Along with these, the radio show will be filled with many other artists and leaders who have incredible stories.

Aaron Jackson, founder and leading man of the Aaron Jaxon Band, will be the musical aaron jaxonsmperformance during “Affrilachia”. Jackson is a mix between modern country, rock, southern gospel and bluegrass. He is the perfect performer for this month’s show, featuring stories and poetry that cut through the stereotype of a homogenous Appalachia, and instead displays the rich diversity of cultures, art, and beauty that reside in the Southern Appalachian Region.

The radio show will be held February 27th at the International Storytelling Center at 7 p.m. The live production will be recorded for broadcast at a later date on WETS 89.5 FM.
